Hume, Samuel J.

Hume, Samuel J.
(1885-1962)
As a scene designer who studied with Edward Gordon Craig at the Arena Goldoni in Florence, Italy, he was associated with the modernist theatrical art called the New Stagecraft. Hume founded the Detroit Arts and Crafts Theatre, one of the notable little theatres in the United States. He incurred Craig's wrath when he adapted Craig's famous movable screens for his own productions. Yet he contributed significantly to leading American scene design away from painted realism toward simplified, symbolic settings.
